This cake is soft and moist, and stays like this for couple of days. It’s perfect if you want to prepare dessert a day or two before a party.

You probably already have most ingredients for this healthy apple cake with oats, all of them are very easily available.


The star of the show – apples are all year round super healthy fruits, you should actually eat every day. I recommend using tart variety like Granny Smith, but you can just use your favorite apples.

That’s one of the ingredients that make this cake so healthy. Oats substitute flour in this recipe. I strongly suggest grinding them, for a lighter fluffier texture, but it is not obligatory.

You can also use oat flour if you have one at hand.

Thick, golden flour made of durum wheat is much healthier option than regular white flour. It doesn’t rise your blood sugar so much, and it’s rich in protein and iron.


Freshly squeezed lemon juice will add tanginess and will prevent apples from turning brown.

If you need to substitute lemon, you can use orange juice.


We use peanut butter only on top of the cake to create delicious nutty layer. I used crunchy peanut butter, that added interesting texture, but you can use any nut butter you have.

Almond or hazelnut butter might be an interesting option too.


I used cane sugar, muscovado, demerara – all types work great.

To make this cake super-duper healthy, substitute sugar for stevia or xylitol. You might need to use more of it, as it is slightly less sweet.


That’s a no brainer! Everyone knows that cinnamon pairs nicely with apples. It is also super healthy, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. It’s packed with antioxidants!

How To Make Oat Apple Cake


Wash and peel apples. Grate using hand grated with large holes. As soon as possible add freshly squeezed lemon juice. Mix cinnamon in.


Measure and mix very well all dry ingredients: semolina, blended oats, sugar, baking powder and cinnamon.


You can divide both groups of ingredients (apples and dry batter) in 3, to create super even layers, or use ‘more or less’ approach. I follow the latter. There will be 3 layers: dry ingredients – apples.

Start with first layer of dry ingredients. In a baking tray lined with baking paper place first layer and flatten it with a spoon. Gently lay first layer of apples. Repeat 2 more times finishing with layer of apples.


Mix peanut butter with sugar and water until you have smooth, slightly liquid paste. Drizzle or spread the peanut butter topping on the last layer of apples. You can just pour it on and spread or make patterns or zig zags.


Put the cake in preheated to 180°C / 355°F oven. Bake for 50 minutes.

VERY IMPORTANT – wait for the cake to cool down completely before taking it out of the pan and cutting. We don’t want to ruin our beautiful layers!

The most important thing is, don’t cut the cake before it is completely cooled down, as the layers may fall apart. It’s best if you let the apples and the cake solidify. This cake is perfect for prepping one day in advance.

I recommend serving it with grated dark chocolate sprinkled on top. You can prepare more peanut butter topping and drizzle it generously on top of baked cake.

Is This Apple Oat Cake Healthy?

Yes, it’s not only delicious, but also healthy.

We are using oats and semolina instead of regular white flour. Oat flakes are incredibly nutritious – they are good source of healthy carbs, protein and soluble fiber. Semolina is more nutritious than common flour – it’s rich in protein, iron, folate and it has lower glycemic index.

If you want your cake to be super healthy – swap brown sugar for xylitol. It has 40% less calories, doesn’t spike our blood sugar, and even have a few health benefits.

Can I Add Other Spices To This Cake?

Cinnamon is of course the classic spice combined with apples, but why not experiment with other variations:

  • Christmas version with gingerbread spice
  • Orange peel and orange juice instead of lemon
  • Fall version with pumpkin spice

How To Store Apple Oatmeal Cake?

If it’s not too hot in your house you can store the cake for 2-3 days on the counter top. It’s best to store it in the fridge – it will last 5-6 days.

  • 1 1/2 kg apples

  • 2-3 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 cup (150g) semolina

  • 1 1/2 cup (150g) blended oats (or oat flour)

  • 3/4 cup (135g) brown sugar (or xylitol)

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 2 tbsp peanut butter (heaped)

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 5 tbsp water


  • Peel and core apples. Grate them using larger holes of the grater. Mix apples with lemon juice and 1 table spoon cinnamon.
  • Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Divide both dry ingredients and apples into 3 parts, as there will be 3 layers of each (optional).
  • Line baking tray with baking paper.
  • Place first layer of dry ingredients on the bottom of the tray, flatten with spoon. Place layer or apples and flatten them as well. Repeat 2 times – the last layer will be apples.
  • Prepare the peanut butter topping by whisking everything in the bowl. Drizzle and spread it on top of the last layer.
  • Bake in 180°C / 355°F for 50 minutes.


  • I used 11 inch / 28cm round baking pan.
  • If you don’t want to grate apples, you can dice them finely.
