There are many recipes for vegan sour cream on the internet. Some use cashews or sunflower seeds. If you want a thick, creamy version, without nutty flavor, I got the best results using soft tofu.

Easy Tofu Sour Cream Is Great Vegan Alternative To Traditional Sour Cream.

For our main ingredient Firm Silken Tofu is the best choice. This soft type of tofu results in a creamy, smooth consistency. 

Extra Firm Tofu that doesn’t state silken on the packaging will not work here, but you can use it to make Easy Vegan Feta Cheese instead.


Fresh lemon juice adds sour taste and tanginess. If your don’t have lemons use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar.


A bit of salt elevates the flavor. If you want to use this cream in a sweet recipe, you can use less salt, but don’t omit it altogether.


A small amount of nutritional yeast enhances the taste typical for dairy. We don’t use as much as in vegan cheese recipes, but just enough to obtain results closer to the real thing.

Nutritional yeast are important item in a vegan pantry. They are rich in many nutrients and vitamins especially from B group.

How To Make Vegan Tofu Sour Cream

While it’s not easy to press the silken tofu, try to get rid of excess water. You can leave it on a strainer for a few minutes.

Add all ingredients to a food processor or high-speed blender. Blend on a medium speed until the texture is creamy and smooth. With silken tofu it will only take 30-45 seconds.

Check the sides of the blender if you need to scrape them down.

Transfer to the airtight container or jar for storing. It will thicken with time.

This version of dairy-free sour cream has much less fat than regular dairy cream or the vegan store bought product. Thanks to tofu it’s also rich in protein and calcium. Lemon juice has a lot of vitamin C and nutritional yeasts are a great source of Vitamin B12 (very important not only on a plant-based diet).

  • 1 block of silken extra firm tofu (350g / 12oz)

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 – 1 tsp nutritional yeast


  • After taking tofu out of packaging try to drain it well and remove as much water as possible.
  • Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides of the food processor as needed.
  • Try and adjust the flavor. Store in an airtight container refrigerated.


  • Try to drain as much water from silken tofu as possible. You can leave it on a strainer for few minutes.
  • Tofu Sour Cream will thicken in the fridge with time.
