DATES

Packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, dates are a real nutritional powerhouse .

They are dried fruit, so they do contain considerable amount of sugar, but it’s counterbalanced with high content of fiber, that contributes to good digestion.

BANANA

Banana provides natural sweetness and creaminess. It’s also quick source of sustained energy, being (just like dates) rich in both sugar and fiber.

If you don’t have or don’t want to use banana, substitute it with peach.

PLANT BASED MILK

Almond milk is my first choice for banana date smoothie, because of its delicate nutty taste. It’s actually my favorite plant based milk for most smoothies.

You can also use soy, coconut, oat or cashew milk.

If you want to counterbalance the sweetness of main ingredients with a hint of refreshing sourness, prepare the smoothie with delicious Vegan Buttermilk that you can make in just 5 minutes.

OATS

I love adding oats to smoothies. Thanks to them the smoothie becomes thick and creamy, and far more substantial. It’s best to choose fine oats or rolled oats, for smoother texture with less blending.

As you will read later, it is a good idea to soak the oats in milk even for a short time (you can do it overnight too).

PEANUT BUTTER

Smooth or crunchy – whatever you have – just make sure it’s 100% peanuts. You can use other nut butters too (almond, cashew, tahini).

The substitute, if you can’t use nuts, is the same amount of vegan cream cheese or vegan soy cream.

SPICES

I chose warmth of cinnamon to round up the flavor of dates and banana smoothie. It combines fantastically with both main ingredients. You can experiment with other spices and additions:

  • vanilla extract
  • pumpkin spice
  • lemon juice
  • cocoa

How to Make Banana Date Smoothie

SOAK

Pit the dates and cut them into smaller pieces.

Soak them together with oats in the almond milk (or other milk you will use for the smoothie). If you plan to mix the smoothie in the morning you can leave dates and oats soaking overnight in the fridge.

You can omit this step if you are in the rush or you have super powerful blender. It helps, however, to obtain super creamy texture.

BLEND INGREDIENTS

Blend everything until you get smooth texture.

DECORATE & DRINK UP

Serve Banana and Dates Smoothie decorated with few banana slices.

NOTE – If you want your smoothie to be cold add 2-3 ice cubes before blending or use frozen banana.

Can I store Banana Date Smoothie?

As most smoothies, Banana Date Smoothie is best when drunk soon after preparing, but you can store it in the fridge for few hours.

If you cannot drink if right after blending, store it in covered container in the fridge, and mix well before drinking.

What else can I add to this smoothie?

This smoothie is quite rich in taste and texture, but surely you can improve it even further with following:

  • teaspoon of dark cocoa for rich chocolate indulgence
  • teaspoon of chia seeds for additional nutrition kick
  • few nuts (walnuts, pecan, cashews)
  • maple syrup if you want dessert sort of smoothie

Can I Make A Smoothie Bowl?

Great idea!

This smoothie is perfect for a smoothie bowl, being already quite hearty and nutritious.

Add 1/41/2 cup more oats for a thicker texture. Decorate with more fruits, chopped nuts, sprinkle with cocoa. Enjoy as a super hearty and healthy breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup almond milk unsweetened (or other kind: soy, oat, coconut)

  • 3 dates – preferably medjool

  • 1 large banana (or 2 small)

  • 1/4 cup rolled oats

  • 1 heaped tbsp peanut butter

  • 1/3 tsp cinnamon

  • (optional) 2 tsp lemon juice

Directions

  • Pit dates and chop them into smaller pieces. Soak dates and oats in milk while preparing other ingredients.
  • Peel and chop banana.
  • Measure remaining ingredients and add everything to the blender container.
  • Blend for around a minute, for the ingredients to combine and smoothie to become creamy.
  • Serve immediately!
    If you serve it later you may need to stir or mix the ingredients shortly again.

Notes

  • PRO TIP – If you want your smoothie to be extra smooth – soak dates and oats for at least 30 minutes. Then you can blend them with half cup almond milk first, add rest of the ingredients and blend again.
  • If you want your smoothie to be cold, use frozen banana or add couple of ice cubes before blending.
